Coping Skills

If you look closely, Scripture doesn’t just comfort, it actually models coping skills: grounding your thoughts, reaching out, regulating your body, shifting perspective, and taking one day at a time.

Trusting God while receiving help

  • Proverbs 3:5-6
β€œTrust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make your paths straight”. Trust doesn’t mean doing everything alone, it means inviting God into every step, including treatment.

  • Philippians 1:6
β€œHe who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”. Healing is often a process, not a single moment.

  • James 1:5
β€œIf any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you”. Seeking help, guidance, and treatment can be part of that wisdom.

  • Luke 5:31
β€œIt is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick”. Scripture affirms the role of care and healing support.

God cares about your body and&mind

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
β€œYour bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…”. Caring for your mental health is part of honoring that.

  • 3 John 1:2
β€œI pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you…”

God promises

  • Isaiah 26:3
β€œYou will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

  • Psalms 147:3
β€œHe heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

  • Isaiah 41:10
β€œDo not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.”

  • Deuteronomy 31:8
β€œThe Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

  • Philippians 4:6-7
β€œDo not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds.”

  • John 14:27
β€œPeace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

  • Jeremiah 29:11
β€œFor I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future.”

  • Romans 15:13
β€œMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him…”

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9
β€œMy grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

  • Isaiah 40:31
β€œThose who hope in the Lord will renew their strength…”

  • Psalms 34:18
β€œThe Lord is close to the brokenhearted…”

  • 1 Peter 5:7
β€œCast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

  • Joel 2:25
β€œI will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten…”

  • Revelation 21:4
β€œHe will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…”

Reframing anxious thoughts

  • 2 Corinthians 10:5
β€œβ€¦take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.”

  • Philippians 4:8
β€œWhatever is true… noble… right… pure… think about such things”. Gently redirecting your mind toward truth instead of fear.

Externalizing worries

  • 1 Peter 5:7
β€œCast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

  • Psalms 62:8
β€œPour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge”. Naming and releasing what’s inside instead of bottling it.

Grounding in the present: one day at a time

  • Matthew 6:34
β€œDo not worry about tomorrow… each day has enough trouble of its own.”

  • Exodus 16:4
God provided daily manna. A rhythm of daily provision, not all at once certainty.

Self-compassion & rest

  • Matthew 11:28-30
β€œCome to me… and I will give you rest.”

  • Psalms 23:2-3
β€œHe makes me lie down in green pastures… he restores my soul”. Permission to rest, not push harder.

Seeking support: you’re not meant to do this alone

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
β€œTwo are better than one… if either falls, one can help the other up.”

  • Galatians 6:2
    β€œCarry each other’s burdens…”. Community is a coping strategy, not a weakness.

Holding onto hope

  • Lamentations 3:22-23
β€œHis mercies are new every morning…”

  • Psalms 42:11
β€œWhy, my soul, are you downcast?… Put your hope in God”. Speaking hope to yourself, even when you don’t feel it yet.

Regulating through prayer

  • Philippians 4:6-7
β€œDo not be anxious… but in every situation… present your requests to God”. A rhythm: notice anxiety - pray - receive peace.
